Suit His Fancy.

"I prefer my Jesus' with Handlebar Mustaches"
I plan to hang this piece with my artist statement on my title wall.  I have affixed it to its vintage predecessor- a slice of wood with the bark on it- and I have resin coated over it again, as a nod in the direction of wood-slice jesus paintings at thrift stores everywhere.  I did make one addition however.  I forged the autograph of 'Jesus Christ' below his chin/neck, with the caption, 'All the Best!' adorning the tongue-in-cheek piece.  I saw that caption on a Kevin Bacon autograph I have saved on this computer.  Because he is awesome.

I'll get pics up here of this piece after the show.

Preview of 'Suit My Fancy'

"the Beast in Me," found object sculpture.
Here are a couple of images from my show that opens on Friday.  I've never shown a sculpture in a gallery before, I've always just hung paintings and illustrations- so I can sense some slight anxiety about how it will be received.  I'm fortunate to say I am proud of all the pieces.  I can't wait to get feedback on this body of work.  I'll get more images on here as the show is in the gallery.

"De-clawing Jesus", found object sculpture.

Suit My Fancy

The first Friday of Oct, I'm having another artshow.   It may be my last for awhile, as I've been trying to diversify my creative portfolio.  It's called "Suit my Fancy," and the theme of 'entitlement' has arisen consistently in my work- though I've tried hard not to chain my thoughts or funnel all my creative juices into one word.

I'm slightly anxious about the overt religious and political questions I ask.  Not nervous because they are really abrasive, but nervous because I don't want to answer them.  I find my work creatively asking questions in high hopes of generating valuable dialogue and conversation between viewers.  I do not ask questions so that people arrive at my conclusions.  Often, I haven't even landed myself.

This is my first sculptural show- made mostly of found objects, painted, and paired with other found objects.  I've been collecting objects for this show for about three years, and the pieces are coming together really well.  I'll post some when I have an opportunity with a nice camera- so that the three people who follow this blog can see what I've been up to.

Here's my tentative Statement about the Work:

Suit my Fancy

We are the protagonists in our own Lives.
We have soundtracks designed to bolster those Lives,
as we walk, as we drive, as we fly, as we eat, as we run, as we work.
Everything is accessible to us, food, information, money..
We are our own hero, our own God, our own Savior.
That which we fancy, we generally receive.

These pieces are what we would talk about if you and I sat down and had a beer.  They are questions, aversions- things we overheard at a coffeeshop.
They are tongue in cheek.

They are not things we necessarily know a lot about.
They are things that are worth educating ourselves about.
Talking about.
Caring about.
Finding Truth and common ground within.
-cause while many things we surround ourselves with-
"suit our fancy,"
many will not.

We must learn to live with them, walk with them, cherish them.
Or Life will drown us by the bagful.

If anyone's got feedback, lemme know I love getting criticism.

Joining the droves of arrogant people that have blogs.

Here we go.

For some reason I decided the World needed to hear my opinion of it, so I did what any qualified person in my position would do- start a blog.  Unfortunately, there are no qualifications for having a blog- much like having children.  Any person- with or without the seemly required faculties, intelligences, propensions, or even legitimate will- can apprehend a child or a blog.

My hopes are probably no higher than those of any other person online, burning midnight oil with their most meaningful thoughts, rendering and re-rendering them.  Feigning the same battle as me at 15- having barely started the bittersweet changes of adolescence, trying to seem tall as a man.  But I'd like to be more realistic, and more honest.

I'm hoping this blog will make my Life and my Creativity more accessible to those of you who desire that.  I want it to be something that is worth stopping by once in awhile.  I want you to experience authenticity in yourselves from the authenticity that can be found in words and images.  These ones happen to come from me.  Cause its my blog.

love.
